may 2013 fishing report

Even though the tourist season has slowed it doesn’t me the fishing slowed down.
May marks the beginning of off -season here, which offers a variety of excellent fishing opportunities.
Offshore, The sailfish actions slowed down, but the marlin moved in.
The past month was an excellent time to be here and have a couple shots at pacific blue marlin almost any day you fished. Many days you could possibly have many more bites, especially if you found floating debris-holding bait like small tunas, bonito’s and/ or mahi.

Our best day this month we found a old tangled net floating which had tons of bait around it, we bridled up some small yellowfin and instantly got crushed, we ended the day with 9 marlin bites, 8 hookups that were fought for 5 to 30 minutes, and 3 releases at the boat.
I heard several similar reports from other boats throughout the month.
On days we didn’t find anything we typically would have at least 1 or 2 marlin bites trolling, and a few sail bites as well.

Another highlight of May is that it marks the beginning of yellowfin tuna season here, and they have started showing up quite steady so far this year.
We have been finding the spinner dolphins with birds, which the larger tunas (35 to 200+lbs) travel with, many days through the month.

The yellowfin tuna become more and more common over the next few months through October. Most are in the 50- 100 pound range and fish up to 200 are not uncommon even bigger ones are occaisionally possible
Yellowfins smaller than 30 pounds or so are usually found around floating debris,
Some days we even catch occasion smaller yellowfin tunas in the 5 to 20 pound range while inshore fishing.
If you really want to experience some of the most fun, intense, & exciting fishing possible come tuna fishing with me here during the summer months May- October when the tunas are here. I specialize in catching them on live bait and casting poppers on spinning gear and I assure you it is an absolute blast. Seeing these heavy fish crash your popper you just cast is a truly unique experience, be sure to rest up because they will wear you out! We rarely have a hard time filling the boat to capacity with 50 to 100 pound tunas.
If you charter a boat that just trolls cedar plugs or ballyhoo around for them, you are on the wrong boat!

Inshore fishing has been very good and steady for roosterfish and Cubera snappers.
The bait has been plentiful and easy to catch, which is the key to inshore success here, and plenty of larger predatory fish follow the schools of bait into the area. The inshore fishing is always pretty good here, but the green season months May- November are consider the best and most consistent. Most days we have been catching 3 to 8 roosters, with a couple cuberas in the mix. There are also several other species of fish - other snappers, groupers, Jacks, Mackerals, etc to pursue inshore. Plenty of spots also hold HUGE AJ’s for a good rod bending fight.
